After taking three years off from performing and writing due to a life-threatening illness, Deidre makes a dramatic return to the stage in 2026. With her debut solo album written and in the process of being produced, Deidre has centered almost all of the writing around her recovery from a double organ transplant in late 2023.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Deidre Rodriguez, stage name Deidre, grew up with a passion and obsession with writing and music. By thirteen she was writing her own poetry and had an extensive record collection, religiously listening to artists like Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Jewel, and Florence + the Machine. After a knee injury that ended a collegiate volleyball career in North Carolina, Rodriguez returned to her native homeland of Texas and dove headfirst into teaching herself chords on the guitar.
As Rodriguez matured as a musician, she began to network with hopes of forming a band after relocating to Austin, Texas. In 2019, she would connect with Drew White and Larry Guggenheim of the band Archer (Maryland Music Hall of Fame inductees). After a single rehearsal where Rodriguez showcased her songwriting and budding vocal talent, the three would instantly form the Americana-Rock band Red and the Rebels.
The following year was spent writing and recording, and in 2021 the band released their self-titled album Red and the Rebels. Songs such as 6th and Main, Golden Hour, Blue, and Lilith’s Fair were received well and played regularly on local radio stations. The band would continue performing in a post-COVID atmosphere, frequenting venues such as Knomad Bar, The Purple Barn, KickButt Coffee, Sagebrush, and Savage’s. In 2022, the ancestral folk ballad Texas Ruins was released as the group continued performing around Central Texas.
The year 2023 would bring about the band’s final single before Rodriguez fell ill: Pisces Moon. That July, the band took a hiatus as their front woman remained in and out of hospitals and on dialysis into early 2024. Despite seeing countless specialists and medical professionals, Rodriguez’ health continued to decline. After being transferred to a third hospital in November of 2023, Rodriguez would quickly become a candidate for both a kidney and liver transplant. In a miraculous three day period, Rodriguez underwent two back-to-back transplant operations. At this point, Rodriguez had been bed-ridden for months and had suffered severe nerve damage. It would require extensive physical and occupational therapy just to get her walking again, let alone singing and performing.
Deciding to give performance a try a few months later, Rodriguez and band would play several shows but ultimately learned that her health was still a daunting obstacle. Hand tremors made playing guitar increasingly difficult, and complications from the transplants would continue to pose issues. After releasing two final singles, The Valley and Sweet Remedy, Red and the Rebels decided to bring their project to a close.
After taking time to focus on recovery, Rodriguez would fall in love with artists like Fairuz, Ofra Haza, Loreena McKennitt, Karen Dalton, GooGoosh, Enigma, and Massive Attack. With newfound inspiration and vision for her music, Rodriguez makes an inspirational return to the stage under the artist name of Deidre.
Combining elements of dream pop, folk, and various world music traditions, Deidre offers the Texas music scene a unique musical cocktail with some never-before-tasted flavors. Her unmistakable vocals take center stage while leading the listener through a confessional story, often told through an esoteric lens and inspired by her near death experience and life as a spiritual practitioner. Lyrically, Deidre’s work evokes powerful feelings and ethereal images born from her dreams, nature, ancient myth, and her mixed heritage.
Her enchanting style and emotive songwriting keep audiences captivated whether they are listening live and in-person, or within the comfort of their own bedrooms. Deidre’s unique artistic perspective injects the pop genre with a depth and authenticity that the cultural zeitgeist welcomes with open arms.
